March has finally started, and many of us are hopeful that we are coming out of our winter ‘hibernation’. Some of us might also be transitioning back to the office soon. This may be when you might be asking what I do about my home office?

March has finally started, and many of us are hopeful that we are coming out of our winter ‘hibernation’. Some of us might also be transitioning back to the office soon. This may be a time when you might be asking what do I do about my home office?

Well, for one, don’t get rid of the workspace you’ve set up yet. It’s also a great time to review the space and what hasn’t worked for you.

Some questions you may want to ask yourself before you decide what to do.

           How does it feel energetically?

Do I need to be stimulated or soothed?

Does this space have enough light?

Or maybe you’re saying, “This place is a mess! I need to get organized!”.

Knowing that the Year of the Water Tiger was going to be tremendously challenging from a Feng Shui perspective, I’ve moved my ‘office’ to a space with high positive energy points for the year. It also has a lot more natural light that is helping my mood and focus.

It may have taken a little effort to move some furniture, rejig my routines and create a sensory space of wellness, but the payoff is fantastic. I’m happier, less fatigued, more focused and happily able to sit comfortably for longer periods as I design.

Perhaps that is a lot more work that you would like for your office, but even some small changes can create a big impact for you.

Check-in with yourself to see whether you’re okay with bright colours like aquamarine and bright pink to your office to provide positivity & inspiration. Adding red to your office may push you into aggression, though, so be mindful.

This year is a year to use yellow, which is the colour of the sun and the colour of happiness and joy. If bright yellow is not your style, consider using more earthy yellows such as goldenrod or ochre to calm down the space yet still bring that sense of joy. Other earthy colours in the form of orange can encourage abundance and support.

Remember to use pops of colour rather than large swathes. That way, you can keep the space neutral, and it’s easy to change things up when you find a piece of decor no longer speaks to you.

As you’re organizing your space and clearing out clutter to prepare for the quickly moving energy of the Water Tiger year, consider bringing brown into your decor. As an earth colour, brown brings balance and stability.

Bringing Feng Shui elements into Interior Design allows us to think about harmony in the design stage so that we can create the most harmonious space possible, sometimes with a few simple tweaks. Has this inspired you to take a quick look at your office space?

I know I keep talking about the year of the Water Tiger, but it is bringing powerful change. Can you feel the changes in the energy of your home already?

We can't have a complete yang home or a complete yin home, and when designing a space, I ensure I incorporate aspects of Feng Shui to create harmony and balance.

As I mentioned in my last few posts, there are calmer or "yin" rooms like the bathroom, bedroom and dining room. And then there are rooms that lend towards activity, i.e. 'yang' rooms.

Because this year is strong, you'll probably be using a lot of energy for very interactive rooms.

The kitchen or family rooms are dynamic rooms where a lot of movement and activity happens. As such, we tend to want to use bright, zesty colours such as yellows, orange, bright pink, aqua, lime green or red in the space.

The kitchen is a great place to combine fire and wood tones. But I would be cautious about adding too much red to a kitchen since we already have the stove (fire element) in place. Instead, bring in balance by using wood tones and small splashes of colour.

The Family room is definitely a "yang" space because it's a lively room full of family interaction. There is typically a lot of activity in this space, and it tends to be a gathering place within the home. The soft textures of big, comfy couches can bring balance to the place. We can also ensure that there is a neutral backdrop to balance out added energetic colour.

The Year of the Water Tiger brings a lot of powerful change, and every home will feel this energy. We can't have a complete yang home or a complete yin home, so we turn to Feng Shui to create harmony and balance.

As I mentioned in my previous post, there are calmer or "yin" rooms like the bathroom, bedroom and dining room. And then some rooms lend towards activity, i.e. 'yang' rooms.

The Family room is definitely a "yang" space because it's a dynamic room for family interaction. There is typically a lot of activity in this space, and it tends to be a gathering place within the home. The soft textures of big, comfy couches can bring balance to the place.

Not only do we want to have balance and harmony in the home, but we also want to create health.

In Feng Shui, one of the ways we restore health is by using the water element. So the bathroom becomes a very important room in the home (especially after being in a very "yang" family room or kitchen).

Make your bathroom more "yin" to be a place to relax in – like a spa – so you have a place to bring balance to the energy in your home from having been bold and courageous and "go, go, go!" all day. Imagine taking a nice luxurious bath or a warm shower to relax sore muscles. Doesn't that sound wonderful? Now, all we need is for your bathroom to be designed to look like your perfect spa.

We’ve been in the year of the Water Tiger for a few weeks now. How is it going with creating balance in your home? Different rooms in the home lend themselves to either yin or yang, depending on how they are typically used. Given that we’re entering a year of being bold and daring, there are some adjustments you may want to make to bring balance into your home and make the most of the incoming year’s energy.

We’ve been in the year of the Water Tiger for a few weeks now. How is it going with creating balance in your home?

It may seem complicated at first; I know that for many of my friends and clients who aren’t so used to this, they say, “Tasia, this is so complicated!”

Actually, yes, getting deep into Feng Shui is complex, and thankfully there are experts like me to help you when you need it.

In the meantime, we can use colour and other simple design elements to bring that balance and create zones within the home that are centred on different elements so that the home in its entirety is in balance.

Now I get to bring up yin and yang again.

Different rooms in the home lend themselves to either yin or yang, depending on how they are typically used. Given that we’re entering a year of being bold and daring, there are some adjustments you may want to make to bring balance into your home and make the most of the incoming year’s energy.

Let’s start with “Yin.” The “yin” rooms, bathroom, bedroom, and dining room should be more “yin” for this year. The bedroom, bathroom, and dining room are meant to be spaces in your home to bring balance.

If you create a “yang” dining room, it could cause people to eat aggressively and eat a lot quickly. When eating mindfully, you take the time to appreciate your food, enjoy it, and feel balanced.

Maintaining your dining room as a “yin” or calm space can support you with doing that. Think of small things you can do with the decor, such as placemats or artwork that can tip the energy balance toward yin.

And since we’re looking for balance, watch out for my next post, where I get into creating those “yang” spaces.

WHAT TO DO WITH THIS YEAR OF THE WATER TIGER

In this year of the Water Tiger, there will be a lot of negative energy coming into the home. The Salt Water Cure is designed to absorb the negative energy that may collect within different parts of your home. It’s one of the ways we bring back energetic balance to a space.

What does a Feng Shui Salt Water Cure do?

In this year of the Water Tiger, there will be a lot of negative energy coming into the home.

If you have read a little about this, then you’re probably asking: “What can I do?”

One of the things we use in Feng Shui is a Salt Water Cure. In order to set this up properly and in the correct place(s) within your home, and for optimal results, it is best to consult with a Feng Shui expert.

The Salt Water Cure is designed to absorb the negative energy that may collect within different parts of your home. It’s one of the ways we bring back energetic balance to a space.

The basic setup starts with a glass container and places brass coins, water, and salt in the jar. We then place each salt cure in optimal areas of the home to collect as much negative energy as possible. If it’s not done correctly, though, it will not be as effective.

Here are some examples of salt cures I placed around my home about a week ago. They were all made and placed around the house at the same time. Let’s see how one of them used to look like 8 days ago and what they look like now.

Pic. 1. When the area is not as ill, the cure changes slowly.

Pic. 2. The salt cure by my front door has some challenging energy and is changing moderately.

Pic. 3. The negative energy is extreme, and I have placed the largest cure. It’s already fast crystallized a large amount of negative energy into the place.

Would you like to try a Salt Water Cure in your home? For best results, it is a good idea to get an up-to-date Feng Shui report or your first one ever if you’ve never had one done before.

HOW DOES THIS FENG SHUI YEAR LOOK?

Every space, including homes and offices, will be affected by the powerful energy shifts of this year. There are simple things that can be done to balance the negative energy in your home. Feng Shui is about harmony and bringing that harmonious energy in your home or office to create or restore balance.

HOW DOES THIS FENG SHUI YEAR LOOK?

The Year of the Water Tiger comes at a great time because now that we’re all sick of behaving ourselves after the Year of the plodding Metal Ox. We’re feeling a strong push to get moving. We can either be confident and courageous or fight it and go into aggressive mode.

Strong and confident people will jump in and initiate dynamic change, and those who don’t like to be “pushed” or told what to do will display more aggression and resistance. This could create conflict within the home and may require changes within the home to restore balance.

Feng Shui is about harmony and bringing that harmonious energy into your home. And with the fast-paced change, this year brings, the ‘stars’ and planets have moved. This brings different energy signatures to a space, and you may wish to assess or re-assess what has shifted in your home or office to create or restore balance.

Every space, including homes and offices, will be affected by the powerful energy shifts of this year. Don’t worry! There are simple things that can be done to balance the negative energy that could show up to know what to do and where you’ll need a Feng Shui report.

           Happy Feng Shui New Year!

As the Lunar New Year brings us the year of the Tiger, the Feng Shui New Year on February 4th brings us the element of Water and the year of the Water-Tiger.

Water is all about movement and lots of energy. Water keeps moving, so that means in this year of the Water Tiger, there will be a lot of change, and it will happen quickly.

In Feng Shui, Water feeds the wood element, and wood or a plant symbolizes growth. This year, being a water year will be a year of growth. And it will be a great year for those who are the wood element!

When we are going through change, because it’s so powerful in this water year, like Water, it diverts and goes around what is in its way. Even with obstacles, as it goes around those obstacles, Water maintains its course. It is open to change and sensitive to it.

Some people may not be used to so much change, and having it happen quickly can cause disharmony in the home. So, considering the Feng Shui of your home is important for bringing harmony to your home and restoring balance.

This year is not only going to be powerful but may also be a very challenging year for most. It could even be a difficult year from the way the energy is set up. Most homes, if not all, will be affected by the powerful energy shifts of this year. If you’ve never had a Feng Shui report, this is the year to do it. And if you’ve already done a report and need one to manage the energy shifts for the year, get in touch with me and let’s get it done.

In either case, please send me a direct message to ask how to get your Feng Shui report.

Decide that you want to make a difference for yourself. No one else. Just you! And don’t fail to believe in your dream.

We often need to be creative to change our mindset and state of mental health that impacts us so we can commit to self-care.

Decide on a space within your home that you can either relax or soothe yourself. This is a must! We cannot truly be 100% for others if we haven’t cared for ourselves first.

A few clients of mine love jigsaw puzzles and you would think they don’t have the necessary space to set up for large puzzles. Thinking out of the box, their homes are designed to accommodate larger kitchen islands or tables that serve as dining, preparation areas and recreation areas.

Have you decided on a space just for you to do what you love? Maybe it’s easily defined like a bath or gardening? Perhaps a space for yoga, to dance, to read, to listen to music? I would love for you to share how you created your joy creation corner.

GOING BEYOND SPRING CLEANING YOUR HOME: FENG SHUI AND SPACE CLEARING

Cleanse old energy and welcome the new.

It’s that time of year when many people start to think about spring cleaning their home as the weather gets warmer, flowers are budding and the sun shines a little brighter and longer each day.

As a Feng Shui consultant, I encourage my clients to spring clean their home as well as implement a space clearing. Space clearing is the resetting of energy so that positive chi and abundant opportunities can enter a space and therefore your life.

Why is that? Well, did you know that when something happens in your environment, energetic debris is left behind and could either be positive or negative. Our environment is like a sponge and takes on our thoughts and emotions and impresses it on everything around us, for example our furnishings, belongings, the walls. This in turn influences the way we feel.

Think back and ask yourself if you have ever walked into a home, office, garden or any other space and felt a dullness or heaviness about it. Now think of a space that you have encountered that brought on the feeling of joy and vibrancy. We intuitively pick up on the energy of any space we enter and many of us have experienced walking into a room that just makes us feel great. If we condition our space to positive influence, the energy will shift to benefit those of us living and working in the breath of that space. Negativity such as illness, arguments or adversity will have the opposite effect.

Space clearing is not a new notion. Historically, we have practiced it in every culture and society using many different techniques. In modern society, spring cleaning is our way of cleansing old energy and welcoming the new. It is a symbol of new beginnings, the expectation of a better future, and buoys emotional and spiritual change.

Whether we use it in our home or business, space clearing is meant to replenish and invigorate the prosperity within your environment. It is therefore recommended to do space clearing at least once a year, prior to moving into a home, or after events that cause negative energy. Space clearing is simple and enjoyable especially when you create the habit to do it.

Here are a few different cleansing techniques and tips which can be used in a home or office. Improve chi so that you will experience increased prosperity and improved health and relationships in your life.

           1. Space Cleansing:

Space clearing is essentially carving out time when you are in positive spirits and high energy, starting at the main door of the home. Then using either a Smudging Stick, sandalwood incense, dried sage or any purifying essential oils such as lemongrass, sage or lavender, walk around the house to purify any energy residues. We suggest waving it in each corner, closet, and cabinet to disintegrate the energies. Open the windows after to disperse the negative energy and to allow fresh air into your space.

           2. Feng Shui Consultant:

Hire a professional Feng Shui consultant to help you address the rebalancing of chi. Sometimes, there are invisible characteristics of a space that need to be corrected along with visible elements. Clients often say that after I have visited a space, there are immediate tangible differences where the space feels lighter and more joyful. Better sleep, health and prosperity and more vibrant energy is experienced as well.

           3. Life Energy:

Plants are one of the most cost effective ways of turning around energy within a space. Add life energy with real plants, fresh flowers and vibrant fruit for example lemons and oranges for zest.

4. Pets:

Pet lovers will be happy to know that having a pet can raise positive chi. Their constant movement, sound and energy causes stagnant or stuck energy to circulate.

           5. Lights:

Dark corners and spaces cause stuck energy so strategically adding light is important. Light in your foyer to welcome you home at night and lights the exterior of your house serve to lift chi too.

           6. Religious / Spiritual Masters:

Based on your religion, you could also request the leaders of your faith to visit your space and analyze or bless the space.

           7. Colors:

Feng Shui works with five elements and a Feng Shui consultant will often use colour to harmonize elements within the space. A change of color or a fresh coat of paint has a positive impact on how you experience the space.

8. Friends and relatives:

Fun and laughter is a sure sign of positive energy and having friends and family over livens the energy.

           9. Music / Positive Noises:

The use of sound disrupts stagnant chi. This can be done with a simple but strong clapping of your hands, playing of music instruments, using Tibetan singing bowls or ringing space clearing bells at all corners or the house.

It’s important to take your time and not rush the process and to be mindful that your intention is to purify your home and feel positive energy, envisioning that you are getting rid of anything negative. This allows for a clean slate, renewed positive energy and appreciation for your home.

Step Into Spring: Home Décor Pastel Colored Inspiration

Pastels can make a very strong statement indeed.

Are you ready to step into spring? Inspiration is everywhere!

One of our favorite sites online for inspiration is

, where you can showcase and discover creative work. And as we move into spring and start to think about spring colors for design and décor, we are exceptionally inspired by their collection of pastel colored designs!

Often people associate pastels in home design with nurseries or children rooms but with the right designer, these beautiful colors can make a strong statement in any room.

Using pastels in statement pieces like a sofa or drapes can add life into any room. For example, “framing the coffee table is a beautiful, tufted powder blue sofa. The color is pretty and a bit playful but does not shy away from the luxurious shape of the furniture.”

It also adds that pop of color without being overbearing on the eyes.

Long gone are the days that pink only equals femininity and females alone. Don’t be afraid to infuse different shades and tints of pink into your home creating a warm, clean, modern looks like this living room! The addition of the blush pinks warms up the room and the artwork with salted taffy colors brightens up the room in a distinguished and subtle way.

We just love this mood board from

This Friday, the world celebrates women with International Women’s Day. The theme this year is #BalanceForBetter – Better The Balance, Better The World. The theme speaks to “gender-balanced boardroom, a gender-balanced government, gender-balanced media coverage, a gender-balance of employees, more gender-balance in wealth, gender-balanced sports coverage”

The personal narrative of Balance for Better for me is that as women, we need to have better balance in life. As women, we are nurturers, we multi-task, we take care of so many things. Balance for better to me means taking notice and celebrating everything we as women do. And it also means remembering that we have to take better care of OURSELVES too. We need to be more mindful, take more breaks, receive the accolades, to invest in ourselves, and remember that doing things for ourselves doesn’t make us

           selfish but self-fulfilling.

The idea of Balance For Better is very much aligned with how Lovelight Home Design helps our clients. We bring happiness into a home and incorporating Feng Shui is one powerful way to achieve this. Feng Shui is equally about the physical aspect of harmony and balance as it is about energy. In honour of International Women’s Day, here are our 5 tips on bringing more balance into the home for women through energy.

           Shine On! Shine Bright!

Did you know that the windows of the home represent our eyes and the ability to have a fresh view on any situation? Clouded windows equates clouded views – clean your windows, let fresh air in and have a new perspective on things!

Make Your Kitchen A Place of Happiness

We all know that nutrients not only sustain us but have a huge impact on our health and energy levels. Our food and our kitchen have a tremendous impact on creating positive health. Keep your kitchen clean and inviting, so you can enjoy and experience your meal preparation and food consumption in a positive way. Wipe down your cupboards, get rid of old food, clean out your fridge, and give your stove a good wipe down.

For those that have a home office, sure it’s nice to have a beautiful minimalistic desk and sleek chair. However, investing in office furniture that is equally comfortable, functional, and stylish is also important. It helps with productivity and energy and helps keep you feeling empowered!

“Make sure that you turn your desk around to face the door to your office. This is essential to feeling in command. Too often we ram our desks up to a wall because that’s where the plugs are. Don’t. When you face a wall, you face an obstacle. Women face enough obstacles already without adding a wall to the equation. Always sit facing the door, and if you’re worried about electrical cords, buy a cord cover.”

Although we are all for going to a spa and treating yourself, you can also create a spa oasis at home to help increase your energy and to rejuvenate. Here are some great ways for better energy in your bathroom: “the details often change, but the main ones are always the same - lots of essential oils and body oils, an aromatherapy diffuser, candles, art that has good relaxing memories and associations and some little details here and there that bring a sense of calm and relaxation (a bunch of dried lavender, several white color porcelain pitchers, etc).”

Trends that Aren’t Really New at All

Everything Old Is New Again, even in Home Décor and Design! #HappyNationalRetroDay!

When it comes to fashion, music, hair, we live in a cyclical world and we love to recycle and even reimagine trends, and there is no exception when it comes to home décor and design!

We are seeing many homes that are inspired by different eras of our past as a complete do-over but also seeing pieces incorporated into a home (or just a room) to give it the balance of nostalgia as well as a modern feel.

There is a skill in creating a space that is cohesive with odds and ends – purposely eclectic. Mixing antiques with modern elements does require planning: knowing how many pieces, how the large should the pieces be etc. - certainly takes a trained eye to avoid a room looking like a museum or too over the top!

When combining pieces from different eras, there should be a common theme. The common theme could be the colour palette – keeping everything the same colour, or using complementary colours. Another common theme are the shapes and textures to keep the space harmonious.

Here two of our favorite popular home décor styles from different eras that we’ve modernized:

           1. Mid-century modern - middle of the 20th century (roughly 1933 to 1965)

This is a style that was very much about functionality, accessibility and modern simplicity but in a sculptural yet organic form. Defined by curved yet clean lines, rounded shapes, bright colours and open spaces. Walls are often painted neutral to emphasize colours and shapes, and textured/patterns. Mid-century is all about going natural and unstained wood furniture in mostly teak but also oak, rosewood, or walnut, is a huge part of the design.

Spaces are meant to look light and airy, where furniture is often sleek and tapered legs give the impression that the furniture is floating.

Textures and patterns are often graphic and geometric and used to accentuate with sudden bursts of colour. We use earth tones and combine them with primary colours to make bold statements whilst balancing all of this with a neutral backdrop. Accessorize with spiky mirrors and round metallic accessories. Another great combination is the use of a dark and white walls to modernize that vintage and traditional look.

“Farmhouse decorating is warm, cozy, relaxing, and full of charm and character. It eschews modern sensibilities and goes back to a simpler time. That said, farmhouse style is surprisingly savvy. To keep a farmhouse from looking too "country kitsch" there needs to be a balance of old and new. It should be clean, stylish and warmhearted. And most importantly it needs to be in tune with nature — but not full of dried flowers and rooster paraphernalia.

Feng Shui is about creating harmony, balance and positive energy for yourself and the space around you. You may be interested to know that there is a strong correlation between Feng Shui and the Chinese New Year.

The Chinese New Year, also called the Lunar New Year, can be considered one of the biggest celebrations in Chinese culture and is celebrated over 15 days. It starts with the second New moon of the year and is considered to be the beginning of Spring. Each year, a Chinese zodiac animal as well as one of the feng shui elements is associated with it and these determine the energy and its attributes in the New Year.

2019 is the Year of the Earth Pig and starts on February 5, 2019. Feng Shui practitioners use the new year to update annual feng shui remedies. The belief is that good and bad feng shui energies shift each year and we need to adjust and add layers of energy that work with this movement. We can either enhance the benefits from good energy or belie any potential undesirable effects.

As a home designer and Feng Shui consultant, I utilise the feng shui elements through decor and furnishing to harmonize and help create positive energy in homes, offices and businesses.

Consider that 2019 is the year of the cheerful Yin Earth Pig with dominant earth energy which symbolizes centeredness and stability. Water in its Yin form and Wood as the Yin polarity and influence also come into play. Yin symbolizes the feminine, increased spirituality, introspection, patience and tenacity. There may be a desire for new perspectives and exploration. To harmonize the elements, we need to incorporate the less dominant elements of Fire and Metal (to balance with Water, Wood, and Earth) when dressing yourself and your spaces.

Let’s start by infusing the lucky colours of red, orange, pink, white and gold. Red, orange and pink reinforce the Fire element (Fire reinforces Earth) and white and gold represent the Metal element (Metal feeds on the Earth).

Decor that represent the Fire element can be candles, colour with rugs, images of fire or the sun, yellow lampshades. Examples of Metal elements in decor are round shapes, white or silvery grey pillows and/or rugs and metal frames.

It’s natural that the new year enthusiasm will start to wain but now is not the time to stop building great energy and health.

We are into the last week of January, the holidays are now a distant memory, and we are getting back into the groove of our routines.

Has your “New Year” energy started to fade?

Feng Shui contains elements of scholarly study which includes physics, philosophy, astronomy, and astrology. It is closely related to the understanding of nature and the idea that energy moves in nature as well as within the 5 elements (fire, wood, water, earth, metal).

Simply put, when you incorporate Feng Shui, it helps create better energy and harmony in your home.

You might benefit from incorporating the following Feng Shui tips so you can invite NEW ENERGY within yourself and the environment around you, and to help promote harmony in your home.

           DECLUTTER

Decluttering promotes uncluttering not only in your home but your mind. Gain a fresh perspective when you get rid of the old.

Clean out your bathroom drawers – if you haven’t used it in 3 months, then throw it away!

Recycle old magazines, newspapers, and donate books you’ve finished reading.

Take a look at your closet – are there clothes you just don’t wear anymore? Donate them!

What is in your pantry! Stale crackers, expired baking soda, half eaten chocolate – toss it away!

Don’t forget the fridge – wilted lettuce, take-out food containers, leftovers from two weeks ago – purge it!

Ask yourself – do I need this? Does it give me happiness? If not, let it go.

           CLEANSE

Cleansing supports you being in your home comfortably and helps give you a positive state of mind, creating a more harmonious home. Get rid of old energy by sweeping or vacuuming and mopping the floors clean. Wipe everything down and get rid of stagnant dust to create flow and circulation. And make sure you empty all the trashcans to get rid of the old!

ADD A BOWL OF ORANGES TO YOUR HOME

Did you know that oranges symbolize gold which also symbolizes abundance? Place them in a bowl in groups of 8, 9, or 10 (these are numbers of prosperity) in a central location of your house.

           BUY A NEW PLANT

The East section of your home is considered the Health & Family area of your house. Place a beautiful new plant in this area to symbolize a healthy beginning and growth in your relationships.

           FILL YOUR PANTRY

Since you decluttered and got rid of all the food that was stale, expired, or simply not being used, you can fill your pantry with fresh, useful food. An empty pantry is often considered bad luck! Why? Because it symbolizes that you have not enough to eat. Filling it helps promote prosperity and good health.
